Chapter 8: The Skyview Temple

The interior would have been pitch black if it weren't for the strange glowing blue mushrooms growing in small patches throughout the temple. Tree trunks and branches crept up the stone walls of the narrow hallways. The whole place had a strange musty smell to it, like rotting wood.

Fi appeared before Link, glowing in the darkness. Master, I have some bad news. The auras of many creatures reverberate throughout this temple. As a result, I can't isolate Zelda's aura. You will not be able to track her here.

Well, that was disappointing. Link was thinking it would be a bit easier to locate Zelda with that ability, but no matter. He would still find her somehow.

The beginning of the temple was straightforward; it was just a narrow hallway descending downward. Bats littered the ceiling, flying into his face. They were easily cast aside by a quick flick of his sword.

He came to a large silky web completely blocking the path. He easily cut through it, but his heart pounded at the thought of the size of the creature who made it.

He came to the first door. He pulled it up from the bottom, lifting it above his head. It slammed shut behind him as he went deeper into the temple.

The temple itself was rather small, but it was packed with monsters. Several reds hung about in the different rooms, as well as small spiders which were harmless in a sense, but they still gave Link the creeps. They were about as large as his hand, and they were just babies.

However in one room off to the side, he encountered something that made his heart stop. For right in front of him was a huge jet-black spider, easily as big as he was, if not bigger. It hung from a single thread stuck to the ceiling, large pinchers snapping at him. Strange markings covered its abdomen, giving it the look of a grinning skull, yellow eyes boring holes into Link's.

The spider snipped the thread and began crawling towards Link, all eight eyes staring at him. Link pulled out his sword and swatted it away with his shield. The spider was caught off guard and was momentarily stunned, giving him time to get a hit in. He landed a blow on its back, but his sword bounced off of the hard outer shell of the arachnid. How could he hit it?

The spider regained its balance, and it threw itself on him. It sunk its pinchers straight into his arm, and he let out a scream. He flung it off of him from its belly, and he realized that it was much softer than its top. Despite the fact that his arm felt like it was on fire, he hit the beast from the bottom, and it flipped onto its back, sharp pointed legs flailing. He thrust his blade straight through its middle, and it became motionless with a final dying screech.

He moaned and held his arm, sword clattering to the floor. He swayed back and forth, breathing hard. Please, please don't be poisonous.

He sank to his knees and vomited onto the stone, still holding his arm. He fell on his stomach, gasping.

He tried to remember what to do when one was poisoned, but his thoughts were fading fast along with his breath, which was coming in short raspy pants.

Then, when all seem lost, he heard a voice in his head whisper to him.

…Look in the kit…

He immediately knew it meant the first-aid kit Pipit had given him. Using the remains of his strength, he took it out. He held up the first bottle his hand came in contact with. Through the terrible shaking of his arm he read the label: Antidote.

He quickly uncorked it and downed the red liquid, not even caring about the horrible taste. Immediately he started feeling stronger. He leaned against the wall, realizing that breathing was getting easier.

After a few minutes of calming his nerves, which were making his whole body quiver, he pulled back his shirt sleeve and cleaned out the bite wound, which had left his sleeve stained with blood. He bound it with a bandage and slowly stood up.

I'll need to be more careful, he thought as he shakily walked towards the door. That was way too close.

He wondered who had spoken to him in his mind. Had it been Fi? No, the voice wasn't melodic enough to be hers. It was definitely a female voice though, so that ruled out his own. It was very strange, but there wasn't much time to dwell on it at the current moment.

After exploring a bit more, taking things slow, he found himself in a large circular room with a high peaked ceiling. Sunlight spilled in from the surface far above, giving the place a faint sparkle of light. A tall spherical pillar stuck out of the ground in the center of the room.

More of the skull-like spiders hung from the ceiling, but he kept as far away from them as he could. He had used his only bottle of antidote, and he couldn't afford to get bitten again.

In the next room after the door closed, he heard a click, and somehow knew it was locked. He tensed, ready for anything. A pile of bones lay in the center of the circular room. They suddenly sprung to life, forming a skeleton wielding two blades. It clomped towards him in worn out boots, red eyes glowing with hate.

Link attempted to hit it, but it blocked easily with its weapons. It let out a shriek and lashed out, landing a blow on Link's chest. He was flung backwards into the wall, head spinning.

The skeleton advanced towards him, but he swung his sword in the place it wasn't defending: straight down its middle. He heard a crack as the age-old body of the monster began to disintegrate, but it would take more than one hit to finish it off. He needed more power.

Link jumped up, vision blurred from the blow he took. It wasn't bleeding, but he could feel a bruise forming. He readied his sword, and leaped into the air. He brought the sword down with full force, straight through the skeleton. There was an earsplitting CRACK as its body exploded into dust, leaving nothing but its dying screech.

Breathing hard, Link sheathed his sword. There was nothing left of the monster, except for a small golden object which fell when it exploded. He picked it up. It was a golden carving, not shaped like anything in particular. He thought it to be a treasure the skeletal warrior had won from another of its poor victims. He decided to take it with him, thinking it might be worth something.

The door had somehow unlocked itself, and he headed off deeper into the temple.

He ran into many more monsters, including a three-headed one. The heads would grow back endlessly unless all three were destroyed at once. It took a while, but he managed to kill it, after receiving a blow to the shoulder.

Eventually he had explored every room, and was in the last one. At the end on the far side was a large golden door with a hole in the shape of an H on it. He found that if he maneuvered the gold carving he had found earlier, it would fit perfectly into the hole. But before opening it he decided to make sure he was ready for whatever was on the other side, in case something was keeping Zelda captive.

He made sure all his injuries were patched up good and tight, and that he still had everything with him. He didn't have much; just his sword, shield, and pouch. He nibbled at an apple and took a swig of water to get something into his system, since there was nothing in there after the fight with the spider.

He stretched, careful about his hurt spots, and turned to the door. He slid the carving easily into the slot with a CLICK. The door split open, revealing the dark room within. He ran inside, ready for whatever evil forces stood in the way of him getting to Zelda.
Link's first dungeon encounter. Not the greatest chapter I've ever written, but it's a start.
